Once you get your Social Security Card you must make sure to never carry it with you. Memorize the number or write it down on a piece of paper in a way that people cannot tell that it is your social. From now on you will realize that many transactions in the U.S. regarding purchases, and the hiring of services will ask for your SSN or the last four digits of it. Be careful not to share your number with anybody else to prevent identity theft.
 
Your credit report shows up on your social security number. Your credit history is built upon how much money you earn, spend and repay. That is why some students apply for a credit card to start building up credit history. With your social and credit history you can change your cell-phone payment options to an actual plan, you can obtain an internet and cable contract, if you rent an apartment your landlord may request you have credit history, if you apply for discount cards or store cards you will need to have credit (Ex. Victorias Secret, etc). In the end having a Social Security is quite beneficial for your stay in the U.S. it offers the benefit of easing transactions for foreign cardholders and makes you a more credible and reliable consumer in the eyes of businesses!
